dc space reunion preview
Post preview. Read it and learn.
The list of performers reads like a who's-who of mostly-old-school DC goodness:
Rambling Shadows (ex-Crippled Pilgrims, High Back Chairs, Velvet Monkeys)
The Pietasters
The Beatnik Flies
Mark Noone (ex-Slickee Boys - supposedly being backed-up by The Beatnik Flies)
Chuck Brown (Go-Go legend and Kennedy Center honoree)
Ruthie & the Wranglers
Rustbuckit (ex-Black Market Baby, Government Issue)
Tiny Desk Unit (first band to ever play the OLD 9:30 Club)
Esmirelda
The Howling Mad (ex-Razz)
9353 (ex-covering the entire city in colorful flyers)
Ottley (ex-Slickees - Martha! and Marshall)
King Giant
plus former members of Murder Ink, Urban Verbs and lots more. And these are just the names I recognize.
The downside is that it looks like each act is only getting 10 minutes. The show looks like it's running from 4:30pm-1:00am. Yowza. And that's if everything goes smoothly.
I just realized that there's not a Dischord-related person to be seen in the full list of performers (with the exception of one member of The Rambling Shadows, who was in the wonderful High Back Chairs). Kind of surprising. Not sure what's going on there.
Still - no complaints. I'll probably never get the chance to see Tiny Desk Unit again. I'll gladly pay $20 to see 9353 play for 10 minutes. Besides - It's a benefit for Tom Terrell. Learn more about Tom from the Post link above.
It looks like it's gonna be a fun night. I'll probably get there around 8:00. If you know me - say hi. It's gonna be a long night to hang out by myself.
I was going to put up a pic of the old dc space, but a Google image search quickly returned 2 pictures of Starbucks. That just depresses me.

I'm sorry to interfere randomly when I don't actually know you (but I do read your entries occasionally as I am interested in the D.C scene) .But wasn't Guy Picciotto expected to show up there ?

Guy was on the original list that came out, but when I got the schedule with the actual times listed, his name wasn't on there at all. If he did show up, he did so sometime before 8:00 when I got there.
Alec Bourgeois was actually one of the emcees. That's definitely a Dischord connection, so I stand corrected on that one.

Jim: In addition to Martha and Marshall, Ottley has a REALLY old school DC connection. Their drummer is Bob Berberich. Bob was the drummer (and also sang many lead vocals) for the legendary Grin. Before that, he was a member of the Hangmen, a mid-60s DC garage band that did the orginal version of "What a Girl Can't Do," later covered by the Slickee Boys and the Lyres. Since then, Bob has been in country bands, but Ottley is a return to his garage rock roots. He also is married to Martha.

Bob - Thanks a lot for the link. I'll check it out as soon as I can. I like what I've heard of the cd.

sounds like a good time...
for some... an amazing time
all those band names are familiar to me
but the music would be a blur
9353 was known more for its flyers than its music
I still look for a DC Metro Bus with those numbers
DC Space was amazing
I saw so many great bands... Embrace, Rites of Spring, Kingface... to name one era
a short time prior...
I recall a number of gatherings where Rollins did his spoken word thing... which was often a bit of a story telling dialog with his best buddy Ian
DC Space was small...
I went there for shows
but... it had its cast of regulars that went there for the bar
I am sure that it was home court for many people
oh...
for a short time there was an after hours club upstairs... Carmichael's After Hours
for the quasi-punk club Carmichael's which was roughly where the Big Hunt is now
as far as the Starbucks goes...
that is our modern age
if DC Space were still around
people would still be bitching
