TM Word Of The Day

TicketMaster Word of the Day:

chitin (ktn) KEY

NOUN:
A tough, protective, semitransparent substance, primarily a nitrogen-containing polysaccharide, forming the principal component of arthropod exoskeletons and the cell walls of certain fungi.

ETYMOLOGY:
French chitine : New Latin chitn, mollusk (from Greek khitn, chiton; see chiton ) + -ine 2

OTHER FORMS:
chitinous (Adjective)

Comments:
It is interesting to note that during last year's cicada craze, a few people who tried eating them as a gag literally gagged as they discovered their allergy to shellfish. The same compounds that irritate those allergic to shellfish are also found in the chitin of insects, or all members of the arthropod group.

I totally wanted it to be 'chitlin' - while you were trying to get Black Eyed Peas tickets...
